• Course Description:

    This commencement-level course in health education examines the eleven conceptual areas recognized by the New York State Health Education Syllabus, which include Mental/Emotional Health, Healthy Lifestyles, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Drugs/Alcohol, Diseases/Disorders, Human Sexuality, Parenting/Family Life, Consumer Health, and Environmental Health. This course will allow high school students to take a close look at their own current state of health and take all the necessary steps to make healthy lifestyle changes in order to reach optimal health. Understanding the importance of the seven dimensions of health (physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, and environmental), and improving health related behavior is the focus throughout the course.

    Course Objectives:

    The student will be able to:

        1. Gain an understanding of the body and how habits and behavior can increase risk of disease and illness.

        2. Become aware of the critical health issues of the 21st century.

        3. Assess personal health through observation of individual health behaviors and self-assessments.

        4. Discover ways to change and modify health behaviors in pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.

    Expectations:

    -Arrive to class on time. Arriving to class late results in a detention on that same day.

    -Come prepared for class.

    -Have a positive attitude and a desire to work.

    -Be respectful to your teacher and classmates. Inappropriate language or actions will not be tolerated.

    -Do not put your head down on your desk. Your desk is covered with infectious pathogens and may cause illness. Also, you will miss out on important information.

    -Keep your notes binder up to date.
